Age of Empires 4 Release Date Speculation
Don’t expect Age of Empires 4 in 2019 or even 2020. With the current timeline for Age of Empires 2:DE and Age of Empires 3:DE I would anticipate Age of Empires 4 to be released in the third quarter of 2021 with pre-orders becoming available in the first or second quarter of 2021.
Currently Age of Empires 2: DE should be on track for a release in 2019, although there has still been no official information regarding this. However, with Microsoft putting out feelers for more testers to beta test the game it’s safe to assume that the game is nearing completion at this point in time.

Our sources have also confirmed that none of the prominent Age of Empires 3 community members have yet been contacted regarding the Age3: Definitive Edition. Since Microsoft have been keen on including community input for Age1:DE and Age2:DE it’s safe to assume that they will use the same approach for Age3. With this information at hand we can also deduct that Age3:DE has either not yet been started or is early in production. Either way, it’s very likely to expect to see Age3:DE in 2020 providing that there are no set-backs or delays.
This theory also keeps the chronology of the series in tact, releasing each of the Definitive Editions in order before finally releasing Age of Empires 4 at the end. An approach like this will help to build a lot of hype around the franchise while also bringing more players back to the earlier games in the series. With Microsoft continuing to support community tournaments in Age of Empires 2 they are certainly giving the impression that they want to win over the community. We’ll see how this continues to develop with the release of Age2:DE.
